Pickleball in Morristown, New Jersey

Morristown area pickleball is split between two separate municipal systems. The Town of Morristown operates Lidgerwood Courts with limited morning hours and an annual badge. Morris Township runs six courts at John W. Ginty Field with longer hours, scheduled open play, and its own badge. A badge from one municipality does not replace the access rules of the other.

That distinction shapes where people play. Lidgerwood is a compact morning option for town badge holders. Ginty has the deeper social rotation, including weekday morning and evening open play. The Greater Morristown YMCA in Cedar Knolls adds seasonal indoor instruction for beginners through emerging intermediate players.

Town Courts and Township Courts

Lidgerwood Pickleball Courts

Lidgerwood Courts are open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Every player must purchase an annual Morristown pickleball badge, wear it visibly, and keep it nontransferable. The courts change on the hour and have a one hour maximum. Consecutive hours are allowed only when no one is waiting.

Four players may occupy a court. During busy periods, doubles is encouraged and one player may not hold a court alone. Town programs receive priority. Court shoes with nonmarking soles are required, and play should stop when the surface is wet.

John W. Ginty Field

John W. Ginty Field has six public courts managed by Morris Township. A yearly township badge is required for ordinary court use. A registered Morris Township resident receives one guest badge and must accompany that guest. Courts are open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., with winter hours ending at 9 p.m. when conditions permit.

Outside open play, courts change on the hour with a one hour maximum when others are waiting. This is the better local choice for long daily access and structured social games. Courts 3 and 6 are designated for advanced play.

Instruction for New and Improving Players

The Greater Morristown YMCA, at 79 Horsehill Road in Cedar Knolls, offers seasonal indoor classes in small groups. Recent formats have included advanced beginner, emerging intermediate, and ball machine drilling. Paddles are provided, court shoes are required, and both YMCA members and nonmembers can register under the applicable program category.

Morris Township also offers spring, summer, and fall pickleball sessions through CommunityPass. These instructional sessions do not require a season badge, and Morris Township residents receive registration priority. They are useful for players who want a municipal learning route before joining the faster Ginty open play rotation.

Unauthorized paid coaching is prohibited at both municipal systems. Private leagues, tournaments, and lessons at Lidgerwood require a town permit, and outside paid coaching is not allowed at Ginty. Players seeking individual instruction can browse local pickleball coaches and use an approved teaching location.

Open Play, Programs, and Court Rotation

Ginty Field has the area's most dependable open play schedule. Sessions run Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 7 a.m. to noon and again from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Weekend open play runs Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

Players place paddles in the rack at the main gate. The first four enter an open court and play one game to 11, win by two. The losing pair leaves, and the winners split to play the next two people in line. Everyone leaves after two consecutive games. When eight or more players are waiting, all four players rotate off, and games may be shortened to nine points.

Organized leagues and tournaments need written municipal permission. Morris Township requires applications at least 30 days before a private league or tournament begins. Lidgerwood also requires a Recreation Department permit for leagues, tournaments, lessons, or other organized court occupation. Regular players who want competition without running an event can use the Ginty paddle rotation or enroll in a seasonal township session.

Planning Your Morristown Pickleball Trip

Lidgerwood is available to nonresidents through an annual badge, but it is not a casual single day court. The current nonresident badge costs $87.50, badges are limited, and new applicants submit an application and labeled headshot. Court access is limited to Monday through Saturday mornings from 9 to noon.

Ginty can work for a visitor playing with a Morris Township resident because each resident registration includes one guest badge and the resident must remain with the guest. Open play offers the clearest way to meet opponents, especially during the published weekday evening blocks and weekend mornings.

The YMCA is the practical indoor instructional choice for a longer visit because nonmembers can enroll in eligible seasonal classes. Morristown and Morris Township are adjacent but administratively separate, so use the correct badge, schedule, and rules for the selected court. Lidgerwood serves Town of Morristown badge holders; Ginty follows Morris Township registration and guest rules.
